SketchFold
From a pen stroke to folded metal. A computational interface for turning sketches into curved-fold geometries.

About the project
SketchFold connects the immediacy of drawing on paper to digital simulation and fabrication. A colour-based drawing language identifies boundaries, mountain folds and valley folds; a computational pipeline reconstructs the drawing as geometry.
Developed by Kane Borg and Sami Markkula as part of Aalto University’s art-ai-fact initiative, the project links sketch interpretation with curved-fold simulation and the STILFOLD fabrication workflow. Prototypes explore paper, cardboard, aluminium and steel.
